What's for breakfast? lunch? dinner? Cheese!

2008-07-09

I'm so excited! This week's cheese question lets us take cheese and justify eating it as a meal (if it's part of a recipe, it can be considered a meal, right?)! It's absolute cheese bliss. Of course, I don't necessarily need any kind of justification to eat cheese, but I'm a fan of this week's topic nonetheless. So, without further ado, our cheese question.

What's your favorite recipe featuring cheese?

Kevin from Boston points to one of my favorites, cheese fondue. Julie from Washington D.C. goes the traditional yet totally delicious route with her answer of macaroni and cheese. Jennifer from Boston throws out a delightful curveball with her suggestion of "blue cheese with ginger snaps because it's unexpected."

Oh, I can't say enough how much I adore cheese fondue. It's just one of those little treats in life that never fails to please. I make a sumptuous cheese fondue with half gruyere and half emmentaler cheese and dip nice crusty bread and cooked mushrooms, yum! I'm a little embarrassed to admit that the fondue recipe I love so much came with my fondue pot. Have I mentioned that, while I consider myself a discerning cheese eater, I'm not known for my culinary abilities?! On a final note, if you're ever in Boston and are craving a bit of the cheese fondue goodness (or meat or chocolate fondue), check out The Wine Cellar restaurant. Owned by a Frenchman, the cheese fondue and extensive wine selection (and very friendly wine suggestions from the owner himself) never disappoint!

A good macaroni and cheese is also something I've been known to enjoy from time to time...in a restaurant. I tried making it myself with some nice quality cheese, but my lack of culinary skills managed to make it taste bland despite the fabulous cheese and my best intentions. So I leave the mac and cheese making to others! If anyone has a favorite mac and cheese recipe, or suggestions for different cheeses to use, I might be willing to try again.

Blue cheese and ginger snaps is a new one I'm going to have to try. That's two poignant flavors that just might make a harmonious mouth marriage. I plan to assign this tasting to myself as homework for the week and will report back soon. This is such better homework than I used to get back in the day!

And that sadly brings us to the end of the cheese madness for another week. Don't miss the show next time when we (and by we, I mean me!) discuss the age old debate, "Where does the best cheese come from?"
